Luxor – Hurghada, Egypt

It was another early morning. We woke up at 6:00 and at 7:00 we met back up with our local guide from yesterday. After settling some business we headed for the Karnak temples. It was only a 10-15 minute drive in the minibus.

The Karnak temples were absolutely incredible. It is considered the largest temple in Egypt (or as our guide said “most biggest”). It was one of my favorite sights in the country so far. We spent about 1.5 hours wandering around the massive complex. My favorite aspect of the temple was the plethora of columns and the enormous obelisk. I also enjoyed visiting what was considered one of the holiest rooms of Egypt (a place where only the high priest was permitted).

At 9:00 we left the temple and said goodbye to our intrepid leader (Dan). He has to leave and take a different group around Turkey. I am sad to see him go. He was an awesome tour guide. We have been left with a woman by the name of Chris (it is her first experience as a leader here)…Ohh and before Dan left he gave us (at our request) Arabian names. I was branded Quwwa (strength) and B was given the name strong (I forgot the translation). Since neither of us are what you would call physically powerful, I am guessing Dan meant the names as a joke…

Once we said our goodbyes we returned to the hotel and picked up our belongings. From there we headed to the bus station. Although we were supposed to leave at 10:00, the bus did not show up until 11:00.

It was a long day on the bus. The ride took 6 hours and we did not have anything to eat but junk food. We crossed over most of Eastern Egypt and drove along the Red Sea. I was surprised how much the area around the Red Sea looked like Baja California; a deep blue see and a very barren landscape.

We did not arrive in Hurghada until 17:00. Once we settled into our rooms we chilled out for a couple of hours. We are planning on having a group dinner at 19:00 and then getting to bed early. We have another early morning departure tomorrow.

NOTE: No posts for a few days as we will be camping on the beach and not able to get internet.
